A new chapter has begun for the residents of Alfortville. The town in the Val-de-Marne region of Ile-de-France has announced the demolition of the three Chantereine towers, heralded as a "milestone in the transformation of the neighborhood". Here's everything you need to know about the demolition, scheduled for Sunday, October 27, 2024.

A delicate operation is underway in the Val-de-Marne. In Alfortville, three towers in the Chantereine district will be demolished this Sunday, October 27, 2024 at 11am. This is what the commune has announced on its social networks. In detail, the towers are located at N°5, 7 and 9 rue Nelson Mandela. This represents a total of 351 homes.

Announced as a " milestone in the transformation of the district ", the demolition of the three Chantereine towers is not without consequences for local residents. The Val-de-Marne Prefecture has issued a decree establishing a safety perimeter for this " demolition operation by tamping ". All residents within the safety perimeter (200m around the towers) must leave their homes by 9am on Sunday October 27. They will be able to return in the afternoon, once the operation has been completed.

" Access to the security perimeter is forbidden to all unauthorized persons from 9am on Sunday October 27. The presence of any person not taking part in the demolition operations is forbidden within the security perimeter until the demolition operation has been completed ", explains the Val-de-Marne Prefecture.

In addition, to help residents affected by the evacuation, the commune of Alfortville is setting up a reception center. " Residents of the evacuated area who have indicated that they would like to be welcomed at the reception center, which will be located at the Émile Ruiz-Vasquez sports complex, 6 rue de Rome, can get there from 7am to 5pm this Sunday, October 27, by entering via rue de Toulon ", the town of Alfortville states on its social networks.

What about parking? All vehicles parked outdoors must be evacuated from the security perimeter by 2pm on October 26. " Vehicles parked indoors may remain within the zone until 7am on Sunday October 27. They will be able to leave until 7 a.m. at the checkpoint corresponding to their address ", warns the city.

Please note that this demolition operation will be broadcast live on the Alfortville commune's Facebook page this Sunday, October 27 from 11am.

As indicated by the town of Val-de-Marne, the demolition of the three Chantereine towers will be carried out using foudroyage, " a faster method than nibbling demolition, enabling the three towers to be demolished in a matter of seconds ". In concrete terms, the foudroyage demolition method uses explosives placed at certain levels to weaken the structures, mainly using gravity for collapse. " To mitigate the dust generated by the explosion, a system combining pools and water misting will be used to minimize the dispersion of particles in the air ".

As for vibrations, the city is announcing the installation of seismic sensors to " monitor tremors and ensure that they remain below levels likely to cause structural damage ".

On its website, the nearby town of Maisons-Alfort warns that the demolition operation " is likely to cause significant noise in the surrounding area ".
