A major coup for mental health in France! - From January 2025, all French citizens will be able to attend a free, over-the-counter psychiatric session every month. A small revolution that breaks down administrative barriers and gives a serious boost to those who need it.
And frankly, it's a matter of urgency. In 2023, 7.5% of French people suffered from depression, according to the WHO. A third of them said they were in psychological distress (IPSOS), and among young people, the figures are staggering: 40% of students display depressive symptoms (University of Bordeaux), while 54% of under-35s are in a state of mental distress (IPSOS).
This initiative is part of the "Mon soutien psy" program, launched in 2022. At the time, it offered eight free sessions a year, but only on medical prescription. Previously limited to eight free sessions a year with a prescription, it is now extended to 12 consultations a year with no formalities. The idea? To ease the financial barrier: with fees of up to 100 euros, many people - especially students, the unemployed and the precariously employed - were giving up on seeking help despite a crying need.
But there's always a but. Delays in obtaining an appointment are already problematic, and could become even longer with the influx of new requests. It's a fine promise, but concrete solutions will be needed to ensure that this fine project does not remain a dead letter. To be continued...
