Built under Charles V on the road to Flanders, 80 kilometers from Paris, the palace of Compiègne welcomed the sovereigns of the Kingdom of France, from Louis XV to Napoleon III. The palace underwent numerous renovations under Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon I, and was even occupied by the Prussians in 1870.
