The Son, Florian Zeller's new film starring Hugh Jackman: review and trailer

After "The Father", which won him the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, French director Florian Zeller returns with "The Son". Starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and Anthony Hopkins, the film is due in cinemas on March 1, 2023.

He moved the whole of America with the adaptation of his play The Father, which won two Oscars (Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins). French playwright Florian Zeller returns to the silver screen with a new adaptation of one of his writings, The Son, which is just as moving. The film is scheduled for release on March 1, 2023.

The Son trailer

For this new feature, Anthony Hopkins(Armageddon Time, Thor, Westworld) is back, and he's joined by Hugh Jackman(X-Men, The Greatest Showman, Reminiscence), Laura Dern(Jurassic Park, Big Little Lies, Star Wars 8) and Vanessa Kirby(Pieces of a woman, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw).

Our verdict

After Alzheimer's in The Father, Florian Zeller turns his attention to depression in The Son, which again brings despair to a dysfunctional family. Hugh Jackman plays the father of a teenager who has no taste for anything, and can't be listened to. It's a hard-hitting drama from the French playwright.

Nicolas, the son of the title, played by Zen McGrath, is lost in the midst of a father who puts inordinate pressure on him, a mother who can't understand him, and his father's new girlfriend, who doesn't even know what to say to him. This is where the emotion comes in, as the young man's situation could easily have been resolved, if his family had known better how to help him. In short, the treatment of the relationships between the characters is magnificent, and if the film doesn't offer the torrent of emotion that The Father did, this new opus also has its share of heart-rending scenes, notably a dilemma faced by the young man's parents in a hospital. But that's all we can tell you!

It's a mainstream film, but be warned: it's a heavy subject, possibly traumatizing for a more sensitive audience.

Synopsis of The Son

Nicolas is seventeen and seems to have a hard time living. He's no longer the bright child who always smiled. What's happened to him? And why doesn't he go to school anymore? Overwhelmed by events, his mother doesn't know what to do, and Nicolas asks to live with his father. His father does everything in his power to save him and give him back his zest for life. But can you really save anyone but yourself?
