The Worst Neighbor in the World marks a turning point for Tom Hanks, known for his iconic roles in Forrest Gump, Alone in the World and, more recently, Elvis. Directed by Marc Forster, famous for such works as World War Z and Jean-Christophe et Winnie, the film presents Tom Hanks in a new light, that of a cantankerous widower.
Adapted from the bestseller Old, Grumpy and Suicidal: Life According to Ove by Fredrik Backman, The Worst Neighbor in the World tells the story of Otto Anderson(Tom Hanks), a lonely old widower who spends his days grumbling and criticizing his neighbors. Otto's gloomy routine is disrupted when a young family moves in next door. Little by little, he is tamed by their kindness and begins to rediscover the joy of living.
This film will appeal to fans of feel-good movies and dramatic comedies, offering a blend of humor and emotion. Fans of Tom Hanks will be delighted to see him in a different, more nuanced and complex role. The film's originality lies in the main character's transformation from gloom to hope, reminiscent of works such as Le Grand Bain and Intouchables. If you liked those films, The Worst Neighbor in the World is for you.
The Worst Neighbor in the World is a notable addition to the feel-good movie genre, with Tom Hanks delivering a touching and memorable performance. Directed by Marc Forster and based on a best-selling novel, this film promises to warm hearts and entertain the whole family. Available on Prime Video from July 1, 2024, it's an opportunity not to be missed for an enjoyable evening.
Our opinion
You've heard of them - they waste time at the supermarket checkout, meddle in things that don't concern them, and bark at you at the slightest opportunity. Otto, the character played by Tom Hanks, is one of those grumpy senior citizens who annoy the world, with his imperturbable routine and his tantrums. Yet behind the caricature lies a deeply sad and desperate man. When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets Marisol, a quick-witted mother, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside down.
This is where the film becomes truly touching. While one might expect a feel-good comedy, Marc Forster 's feature is far more subtle and nuanced than most films of its kind. For one thing, witnessing Otto's multiple suicide attempts is an unexpected sight in a family comedy. But above all, the character proves genuinely touching as we learn more about him. What's more, Mariana Treviño, who plays Otto's new neighbor Marisol, is a formidable actress, and her character is as funny as she is touching. She's the film's real highlight.
Last but not least, we find ourselves moved as the film progresses. In the end, The Worst Neighbor in the World is more touching than funny, revealing a deep-seated evil that eats away at victims of loneliness. In fact, there's a warning message in the closing credits to alert us to the plight of people in a state of despair.
