Karin Viard and dramatic comedies are a true love story. After the touching Maria Rêve, the actress returns with Sage-Homme, broadcast this Tuesday, November 14, at 9:10pm on Canal+.
Sage-Homme is a tale of initiation into the world of hospitals, and more specifically into the world of midwifery. A milieu that falls victim to the clichés of its main character, Léopold, played by Melvin Boomer, in his first film role. This feature-length film also marks the return to cinema of director Jennifer Devoldère, who hasn't been back behind the camera since Et soudain, tout le monde me manque, which was a minor hit in 2010.
Our verdict
Sage-Homme may be a family comedy full of fine values, but that doesn't make it a smooth film. Very didactic and educational, we learn a lot about the midwifery profession (and why this name is the same for men) and the viewer is spared nothing. The simple as well as the difficult cases, the best aspects as well as the worst... We even get to see an actual birth, filmed in close-up, where we see absolutely everything.
It just goes to show that when you're a midwife, every day is different. Above all, we learn, like the protagonist, to leave behind the cliché of a feminine and shameful profession for aspiring doctors. And for that, Sage-Homme is well worth seeing. Above all, Karin Viard continues her streak of playing a woman of strong convictions. She's brilliant in her role as the department's loudmouth, and is almost alone a good reason to see the film.
After failing the medical entrance exam, Léopold enters midwifery school by default, hiding the truth from those around him. But when he meets Nathalie, an experienced midwife with a passionate nature, he changes his outlook on this fascinating world and overturns his certainties.
