For Maria Rêve, their first theatrical release, directors Lauriane Escaffre and Yvonnick Muller have surrounded themselves well! Karin Viard(Les Chatouilles, Polisse, La Famille Bélier) plays the lead role in this romantic comedy, that of a cleaning lady who finds happiness after her assignment to the Beaux-Arts de Paris. She is joined by Grégory Gadebois(Délicieux, Le Jeu, Coupez !) as the janitor, and the talented young Noée Abita(Slalom, Les Passagers de la nuit, Mes jours de gloire). The film is due for release on September 28.

Synopsis of Maria Rêve:

Maria is a cleaning lady. Married for 25 years, reserved, shy and awkward, she never leaves her flowered notebook, in which she writes poems in secret. When she is assigned to the École des Beaux-Arts, she meets Hubert, the school's whimsical janitor, and discovers a fascinating place of freedom, creativity and daring... In such a new world, will Maria, who has always been devoted and discreet, finally let herself be overwhelmed by life?

Our review of Maria Rêve:

Boldness has always been lacking in the life of Marie, an ingenuous little mother. As a result, nothing goes right in her life, either with her husband or her daughter. Her entry into the Beaux-Arts as a cleaning lady is going to rock her world, as is her encounter with Hubert, the atypical janitor who doesn't mince his words. Maria, who had been a passive spectator of her life, takes charge and, like the students, lives her life as she sees fit.

This is a lovely first film, whose appeal lies above all in its pairing of lead actors. Grégory Gadebois and Karin Viard know how to make their characters endearing. The film is served up by some fine directorial ideas. It's a good Sunday-evening film, and one that you'll find yourself moved by. Above all, it gives us a glimpse into the world of the Beaux-Arts, with its sometimes zany students and teachers, but full of ideas and creativity.
