After Du Soleil dans mes yeux, actor and director Nicolas Giraud presents his second feature film as a filmmaker, but also as a screenwriter and lead actor. L'Astronaute, also starring Mathieu Kassovitz and Hélène Vincent, is expected in theaters on February 15, 2023.
The pitch of this drama is as zany as it is serious: Jim, anaeronautical engineer, wants to become the passenger of the first amateur space flight. For this, he has been building his rocket for eight years and getting ready. But as his dream comes to an end, he must find help to succeed in this insane project, whose failure means certain death.
The film doesn't start out well. More than half of the film is flat, badly paced and very austere. This is due to the dark and cold countryside settings, but mostly to the actors, whose acting is far too serious and in a rather unbelievable way. Moreover, this first half is far too long to hope to hook the viewer. It would have been better if Nicolas Giraud had stayed behind the camera and chosen another actor to play the main part. His character is not very talkative, cold, unlovable, and the viewer will probably have difficulty identifying with him. Unlike his journey, which opens him up more and more to others and to those who want to help him.
However, and fortunately, the last act of the film makes up for everything else. We will not tell you the outcome of The Astronaut, but its last part is frankly successful, as much on the technical level as on the emotional one. Poetic, very pretty and subtle, it allows to leave the room with a nice final impression. It is in this last part that we discover Nicolas Giraud's talent as a director and the wildly dreamlike aspect of his character's project.
