After Du Soleil dans mes yeux, actor-director Nicolas Giraud presents his second feature film as filmmaker, screenwriter and lead actor. L'Astronaute, also starring Mathieu Kassovitz and Hélène Vincent, is due in cinemas on February 15, 2023.
The pitch for this drama is as zany as it is serious: Jim, an aeronautical engineer, wants to become the passenger on the first amateur space flight. He's been building and preparing his rocket for eight years. But just as his dream is about to come true, he has to find help to succeed in this insane project, failure of which means certain death.
The film doesn't get off to the best of starts. More than half the film is flat, poorly paced and very austere. This is due to the dark, cold countryside settings, but above all to the actors, whose acting is far too serious and rather implausible. What's more, the first half is far too long to hold the viewer's interest. Perhaps it would have been better if Nicolas Giraud had stayed behind the camera and chosen another actor to play the main role. His character is not very talkative, cold and unlovable, and viewers will undoubtedly find it hard to identify with him. Unlike his journey, which increasingly opens him up to others and to those who want to help him.
Fortunately, however, the film's final act makes up for everything else. We're not going to tell you the outcome of L'Astronaute, but its final part is a real success, both technically and emotionally. Poetic, beautiful and subtle, it leaves the audience with a fine final impression. It's in this last part that we discover Nicolas Giraud's talent as a director and the wildly dreamlike aspect of his character's project.
