It's been over a year since Netflix announced its Bernard Tapie biopic mini-series, starring Laurent Lafitte in the title role. This Wednesday, April 5, we were able to discover the first images of Tapie through a trailer, as well as a release date. Watch for the full series on Netflix on September 13.
In seven episodes, Tapie paints a stunning portrait of the man of a thousand lives. Bernard Tapie alternates regularly between the bottom of the pit and the top. His goal is simple: to become rich and lead the life of a king, no matter what the means - singing, trading, etc. He's a self-made businessman, but at what price? He has no qualms about scheming to get what he wants, lying, manipulating his interlocutors, or simply tricking them. It's quite thrilling to see the life Tapie leads, without faith or law, and above all without fear. He's a business genius coupled with a scumbag, everything that makes a fascinating tragic hero. It's easy to understand why Tristan Séguéla and Olivier Demangel chose him as the hero of their series.
In terms of form, the story also holds up very well. The 70s ambience is very well conveyed in the first episodes, and you'll find yourself confusing Laurent Lafitte with his character, so impressive is his performance. He's a smooth talker with a way with words and a flair for the punchline, but at heart he's a proletarian. Far from being a small-time breadwinner, he's capable of going all-in (no pun intended), in a bid to climb higher. But of course, such risks don't always pay off. In short, this is our favorite of the fall season.
From singer to businessman, minister to prisoner, Bernard Tapie has been through it all. Through his successes and failures, Tapie traces the romantic destiny of an extraordinary public figure.
