The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has prohibited any gathering or demonstration around the Palais des Festivals, this Saturday, May 13. The order comes into force this Tuesday 16, and will end on Sunday 28, the dates of the beginning and end of the Cannes Film Festival. The fear of seeing outbursts or demonstrations during the festival is great on the Croisette, as the most important film event of the year approaches.
And there is reason for this. While France is in the middle of a strike movement against the pension reform, many protesters have made it known that they intend to make themselves heard during the most publicized events of the moment. Among them, the Cannes Film Festival is a prime target, as well as the Roland-Garros tennis Grand Slam, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Angoulême Festival.
The CGT had planned two demonstrations during the fortnight, and had threatened the festival with sabotage, notably in the form of power cuts. Will this ban change anything in the plan of the demonstrators? Answer on Tuesday.
