Our verdict
Right from the opening shot, the cards are laid out: Un Coup de Maître is about an artist, and the film will feature some very fine works of art. The artist is Renzo Nervi (Bouli Lanners), a misanthropic painter in the midst of an existential crisis. His only friend is his agent, Arthur Forestier (Vincent Macaigne), owner of an art gallery in Paris. Un Coup de Maître is the story of an unbreakable, if largely toxic, friendship.
And while the artist sinks into despair ("You make art when you know nothing else," he tells the man who dreams of being his apprentice), his agent wants to do everything in his power to save him. And so begins a completely different film, with new themes. Yes, Rémi Bezançon surprises us by making two films in one. We won't reveal the origin of this shift, but it's the result of an audacious plan that ends up overtaking them. With this second part, the film loses us a little, multiplying its plot twists and turns, which are not always very credible. A pity, since the first part - recounting the spleen of an artist once at the top following the loss of his muse - had everything to charm.
