A Dream Team, the new feel-good comedy directed by Taika Waititi, expected on VOD for purchase on April 18 and rental on April 26, 2024. The film tells the incredible story of the American Samoa soccer team, starring Michael Fassbender as their coach.
New Zealand director Taika Waititi, well known for his originality and offbeat humor, this time delivers a true soccer epic that will put a smile on your face. After the Oscar-winning success of Jojo Rabbit, Waititi once again takes the film world by surprise with this adaptation of a documentary that caused a sensation in 2014.
The film recounts the true story of the American Samoa soccer team, which in 2001 suffered the worst defeat in World Cup history, losing 31-0 to Australia. As the 2014 World Cup qualifiers approach, this atypical team recruits a disgraced maverick coach, played by Michael Fassbender, to try and change their fortunes.
And if you're already familiar with the documentary, you won't be surprised by the film, which not only retains the title, but also tells the story very faithfully. It's a typically American genre, the feel-good movie adapted from a truer-than-life story. And this one is simply incredible. Taking an interest in the worst soccer team in the history of the sport is a strange gamble, and yes, you'll certainly be impressed by its fate, and moved by the ending, which does everything to make you exult.
But Une équipe de rêve doesn't have much else to offer. It's a flatly written little film with caricatured characters, in which we expect a bit of everything: the amateur players, each one lamer than the last, the angry, resigned coach who learns true happiness from them, etc. The surprise is absent, and that's a shame, because the story is really beautiful. The surprise is absent, and that's a shame, because the story is really beautiful. Perhaps the documentary was enough, and there was no need to adapt it into a fiction film.
