Our verdict
One thing's for sure: if you liked the first Mean Girls film, you're sure to enjoy this remake, as it seems to have been designed with fans in mind. The film has developed a cult following over the years, and this new version respects the legacy of its predecessor to the letter, notably by taking the script to the letter, even if it means keeping the most cult lines to the word. And if you're wondering what's the point of going to see a remake that's virtually identical to the first film, well, it's the musical numbers.
Yes, Mean Girls 2024 is a musical, and a damn fine one! Unlike most films in this genre, Tina Fey's feature-length film takes full advantage of the clip aspect of the musical numbers. The aesthetics, photography and even the frame ratio change when the characters start singing, and these scenes are completely what you'd expect from a movie musical: striking, rhythmic and generous.
What's more, the new cast works, and even manages to make us forget the first girl band. This new version is also very much in tune with the times. While this may appeal to those who recognize themselves in the wanderings of today's teenagers, the film runs the risk of looking dated in a few months' time.
