Filmmaker Gilles Perret is back with"La Ferme des Bertrand", a documentary immersed in the rural world of Haute-Savoie. Expected to hit screens on January 31, 2024, the film highlights the life of the Bertrand family, owners of a small dairy farm nestled in the heart of Haute-Savoie.
In 1972, the Bertrand farm, run by three single brothers, was one of the many dairy farms in the French countryside. It was at this time that Gilles Perret, a neighbor and friend of the family, first decided to film these men and their daily work. Twenty-five years later, Perret's camera returns to this farm, now run by Patrick and Hélène, the nephew and wife of the original owners.
The film revolves around the transmission of heritage, showing how the three brothers gradually hand over the torch to the new generation. Viewers are invited to share in the intimacy of this family, for whom farming is more than a vocation: it's a way of life.
And it's precisely in this humanity that"La Ferme des Bertrand" stands out. The film is in fact a chronicle of farming life, highlighting the dedication and self-sacrifice required to run a business like the Bertrand family. Behind the rural images lie the daily challenges and struggles of this profession.
Gilles Perret, accustomed to casting his eye over French society and its forgotten members, once again proves his accuracy and finesse of analysis. His sincere, sympathetic camera captures the emotions of the Bertrand family and their visceral attachment to the land where they grew up.
In the end,"La Ferme des Bertrand" is much more than just a documentary. It's an essential work that helps us see and understand the reality of contemporary farming. Between hopes and disappointments, work and transmission, love of the land and economic realities, the film constantly oscillates, like life on the farm.
We leave the screening with a feeling of greater closeness to the rural world, with humility and respect for these farmers who, from one generation to the next, continue to keep our countryside alive. So don't hesitate to discover"La Ferme des Bertrand" on January 31, 2024, and plunge into the heart of Haute-Savoie for a rare and precious cinematic experience.
50 years in the life of a farm... Haute-Savoie, 1972: the Bertrand farm, a 100-animal dairy farm run by three bachelor brothers, is filmed for the first time. In 1997, as the three farmers were in the process of handing over the farm to their nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène, director Gilles Perret devoted his first film to them. Now, 25 years later, the director-neighbor takes up the camera again to accompany Hélène as she, in turn, hands over the farm. Through the words and gestures of the people who have succeeded them, the film reveals a deeply moving life story in which work and transmission play a central role: an intimate, social and economic history of our farming world.
