Doug Liman, director of such cult films as Memory in Your Skin, returns with The Instigators, a wild action-comedy starring the iconic acting duo of Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. Written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, the film tells the story of two outcasts - a desperate family man and an ex-convict - who, against their better judgment, join forces to pull off a heist that quickly turns into a fiasco. The Instigators also marks the participation of such notable talents as Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg and Ron Perlman, in a world where the protagonists' clumsiness leads to increasingly chaotic situations.
In The Instigators, Rory (Matt Damon), a father at the end of his rope, and Cobby (Casey Affleck), an ex-con with a troubled past, team up to steal a large sum of dirty money from a corrupt politician. But when their plan falls through, things quickly get out of hand. Pursued by police, unscrupulous criminals and power-hungry bureaucrats, they unwittingly take Rory's therapist (Hong Chau) on the run through the streets of Boston. Between misunderstandings and mishaps, the two acolytes will have to put their differences aside and constantly improvise to avoid a tragic end.
The Instigators is aimed at audiences who enjoy dynamic action comedies, with a touch of dark comedy in the manner of films like Ocean's Eleven or The Beverly Hills Cop. Doug Liman's collaboration with Matt Damon, following on from the success of Memory in the Skin, has raised many expectations. What sets this film apart is the mix of awkward comedy and tense scenes, where the main characters, though unlucky and overwhelmed by events, retain a humanity that makes them endearing. If you enjoyed the absurd situations of Snatch or the chaotic dynamics of The Brothers Sisters, The Instigators could well be a favorite.
Starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, The Instigators promises an explosive mix of dark humor and unbridled action. Once again, Doug Liman succeeds in creating a universe where anti-heroes take center stage, confronted with situations that are beyond them, but where hope and mutual aid emerge in the midst of chaos. This film should appeal to fans of heist comedies, with a highly anticipated release on Apple TV+ from August 9, 2024.
