Marvel Studios has finally revealed the first images from Thunderbolts*, a team of super-villains and anti-heroes that promises to shake up the MCU universe. Directed by Jake Schreier, the film brings together such familiar faces as Yelena Belova(Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes(Sebastian Stan) and Red Guardian(David Harbour). With a screenplay by Lee Sung-Jin and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts* marks a turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), featuring morally ambiguous characters ready to redeem themselves or fall back into their ways.
Thunderbolts* will be released in cinemas from April 30, 2025.
Synopsis: Gathering of super-villains and anti-heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sent on secret missions in an attempt to redeem themselves.
Following the events of Captain America: Brave New World (in cinemas February 12, 2025), the MCU plunges us into the story of Thunderbolts*. A group of super-villains and anti-heroes, led by the mysterious Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are brought together to carry out secret missions. Among them are familiar faces such as Yelena Belova, reprising her role as the fearsome Black Widow, and Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier. This disparate team, made up of figures such as the Red Guardian, Ghost, John Walker and Taskmaster, will have to learn to work together, not without friction, to carry out dangerous missions in the hope of redeeming themselves in the eyes of the world. But can they really escape their nature?
Thunderbolts* is aimed primarily at superhero fans who appreciate darker narratives, like those in Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy. This film is aimed at adult audiences who have followed the evolution of the MCU and are looking for a more complex, ambivalent approach to the characters. The originality of Thunderbolts* lies in its concept of redemption mixed with often dubious motivations, with characters who are neither totally good nor totally evil. It's expected that this film will bring a breath of fresh air to the Marvel universe, moving away from multiverse narratives and returning to more grounded, human issues. If you enjoyed Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thunderbolts* might just live up to your expectations.
With its impressive cast and its promise to deliver a plot where super-villains are at the heart of the action, Thunderbolts* could establish itself as one of the MCU's flagship films of 2025. By bringing together popular characters and exploring themes of redemption and betrayal, Marvel once again proves its ability to renew its stories while keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
