The Disappearance of Josef Mengele by Kirill Serebrennikov, in Cannes Première selection at Cannes 2025

Kirill Serebrennikov returns to Cannes with The Disappearance of Josef Mengele, in the festival's Cannes Premiere selection.

One year after presenting Limonov in Official Competition, Kirill Serebrennikov is back on the Croisette, this time in the Cannes Première selection. At Cannes 2025, he will unveil his new film, The Disappearance of Josef Mengele .

Starring August Diehl in the title role, the feature film is an adaptation of the novel The Disappearance of Josef Mengele, written by Olivier Guez and awarded the Prix Renaudot in 2017.

"Kirill Serebrennikov, whom we no longer need to introduce, is not only a filmmaker, but also an artist. A Russian dissident, opponent and resistance fighter, he directed Olivier Guez's book The Disappearance of Josef Mengele," explained Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, at the traditional press conference.

Where and when to see The Disappearance of Josef Mengele in France?

The Disappearance of Josef Mengele will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.

Synopsis: The years of flight of Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who found refuge in South America at the end of the Second World War. Told entirely from the fugitive's point of view, from Paraguay to the jungles of Brazil, the film paints a harsh and complex portrait of an executioner trying to escape his fate, while the world around him evolves and becomes aware of Nazi crimes.
