Last night saw the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival... and now it's all anyone's talking about. Bérénice Bejoenmaster of ceremonies, Claude Miller's latest film, Thérèse Desqueyroux, in the closing ceremony, Woody Allen as the big absentee, Stewart-Pattison as the star couple. In short, the ink is flowing and there's no end in sight: the Directors' Fortnight selection is still to come...
A glamorous and rocking selection! Meanwhile, Paris is losing some of its appeal. As the festival only screens previews, we can't prepare our reviews too early. Never mind, we'll take comfort in the fact that the Champs-Elysées Film Festival is coming up in June... and then it's only ten short days.
In the end, May is like Cannes, a nice mix of genres. If the month starts with horror films: The Cabin in the Woods (May 2), The Bizarre Theatre (May 9), we can also expect one big blockbuster a week, sometimes nostalgic: American Pie 4 (May 2), Men In Black III (May 23), sometimes fantastic: Dark Shadows (May 9), Prometheus (May 30) and sometimes idyllic: Cosmopolis (May 23) and On the Road ( May 23). Kristen and Rob are releasing their films on the same day, how cute. Cute isn't it, though: these two films are in competition at Cannes. For the sake of their fragile relationship, let's hope they don't win: they say you can't survive an award. I suppose that's especially true of personal awards, but all the same, let's not tempt the devil - after all, they still have to play the lovesick for a while.
Alongside these big war machines, and in a much lighter style, France also comes up trumps: Chercher le garçon ( May 9), Je fais feu de tout bois ( May 30) promise some lovely moments of laughter that the editorial team can't wait to discover.
The month of May is all about the spotlight, and after all, when it comes to cinema, it's hard to beat that. So even if the stakes are high on the Croisette, don't forget that there's life in Paris too!
