Every year, in the run-up to Christmas, the Forum des Images celebrates animation with its Carrefour du cinéma d'animation festival.
Over the course of a week, you'll be treated to eagerly awaited previews and never-before-seen animated films, as well as school shorts, favorites and special screenings... films from France and abroad by established talents and young directors alike!
This year, Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal have been chosen to open the festival with their beautiful They Shot the Piano Player, to be previewed on Wednesday November 22 at 8pm (national release on January 24, 2024). The story of a New York journalist who explores the history of bossa nova and discovers the tragic fate of pianist Tenorio Jr. A colorful film, with an incredible soundtrack, that skilfully blends documentary and fiction for a plunge into 1970s Latin America.
One of the highlights will be the animated Exquisite Corpse. Students from animation schools all over France will have four days to take up the challenge of producing an animated sequence based on an image supplied by Benoît Chieux...
As usual,Japanese animation will be in the spotlight, with the premiere of The Tunnel to Summer, a heart-warming fantasy adventure set against a backdrop of romance. Also on the program,
Souvenirs goutte à goutte, a masterpiece by the great Takahata, and the traditional Japanim evening, with two sci-fi must-sees: the cult triptych Memories and Cowboy Bebop, an ultra-jazzy space western, preceded by the screening of Rintarō's brand-new short film.
Stop motion also awaits fans with three feature-length films exploiting the technique. Co-directed by Disney and Pixar veteran Jim Capobianco and volume regular Pierre-Luc Granjon (The Four Seasons of Leon), Leo explores the life of the great Leonardo da Vinci. After being presented as a work in progress at the 2021 edition of the festival by its two directors, the film will be screened as a preview, to be discovered from age 7!
While South Korea has become accustomed to 2D productions, Krisha and the Master of the Forest is the country's first volume production in over 30 years. The story of this little girl, a reindeer herder
reindeer herder in the Far North, whose tribe is threatened by modernization, will appeal to young and old alike. Finally, Pinocchio, the latest film by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, released exclusively on Netflix, will be screened as part of the festival in a special screening!
Also of note are the Les Femmes s'Animent association, which spotlights the talents of today and tomorrow during short screenings, and the FICAM, which is coming specially from Meknes to present the best of African production.
