The monumental stage of theOpéra Royal de Versailles is set to host an equally monumental show, Ballet Preljocaj's Hommage aux Ballets Russes. This performance, conceived as a triptych, is a tribute to the innovative and memorable work of the Ballets Russes, the great classics of the genre: the show will feature three parts, for three of the choreographer's works: Annonciation - Torpeur - Noces.
The Ballet owes its name to choreographer Angelin Preljocaj . Preljocaj, who won the 1997 Bessie Award at the 13th New York Dance & Performance Award, is renowned for his mastery of set design, choreography and even music.
The first show in the triptych, "Annunciation", created in 1995 for two dancers, stands out for its finesse and captivating elegance. This is followed by the second part with "Torpeur", a new creation from 2023 for 10 dancers. This show reflects Preljocaj's unwavering commitment to artistic innovation, and his determination to defy established dance norms. Finally, "Noces", also created in 1989 for 10 dancers, closes the evening. In it, Preljocaj interrogates the sacred moment of the Immaculate Conception in a pas de deux between the angel and the Virgin, revealing all the carnal power of this episode in the mysteries of faith.
Together, these three works highlight the coherence and strength ofchoreographer Angelin Preljocaj's extraordinary choreography . These performances continue to maintain the power of his gesture, which has lost none of its intensity in almost forty years. An evening to be experienced by contemporary ballet fans and those curious to explore this field of artistic expression, at the Opéra Royal de Versailles from March 28 to April 5, 2024.
