English stager Katie Mitchell and music director Raphaël Pichon open the Opéra Comique season from September 25, 2017 with Miranda after Henry Purcell’s work.

After the success of Written On Skin after George Benjamin’s opera presented in 2013 at the Opéra Comique, Katie Mitchell returns to Salle Favard to present Miranda, a lyrical creation inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Tempest with music by Henry Purcell. She his work with the current political and economic issues happening in the United Kingdom.

The show takes place in a small English town where a family gathers at Miranda’s funeral. For her children and her husband, the web of time is torn. And yet, past and present merge when they talk about the woman she used to be. Miranda is sung and played by American mezzo-soprano singer Kate Lindsey.

This is the first step of a journey putting women in its heart. Katie Mitchell’s show will later this year be followed by a staging of Marguerite Duras’ The Malady of Death at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and Schatten (Eurydike sagt) by Elfriede Jelinek at the Théâtre de la Colline in January 2018.

The show is in English with French supertitles.
