Versailles, a political and diplomatic crossroads that has always welcomed the world... This is the idea that the Château de Versailles is trying to convey through the exhibition Les visiteurs de Versailles 1682-1789, which runs from October 24, 2017 to February 25, 2018.
The exhibition traces the history of these visits by personalities from all over the world: princes, ambassadors, writers, actors, artists and philosophers... they all visited the king at his personal invitation or for a political or diplomatic meeting. From the ambassador of Siam in 1686 to the ambassador of the Indian kingdom of Mysore in 1788, the whole world knocked on the king's door.
A total of 300 works on display offer a glimpse into history: paintings, sculptures, court costumes, tapestries, travel guides, snuffboxes, parade weapons and Sèvre and Meissen porcelain give visitors an idea of the conditions under which the king was received. It's also a way for visitors to see the château through the same eyes as their predecessors who came here hundreds of years ago. The exhibition will then travel to New York to the Metropolitan Museum of Art from April 9, 2018.
