The Palais d'Iéna - Conseil économique, social et environnemental (CESE) invites Giuseppe Penone to FIAC 2019, a long-awaited return to the capital since his major exhibition at the Château de Versailles. The Italian artist, a leading proponent ofarte povera ('poor art'), uses raw, noble materials such as wood, marble, stone and water, in works that are highly symbolic.
For his grand return to Paris from October 15 to 27, 2019, Penone has been given carte blanche to enliven the vast hypostyle hall of the Palais d'Iéna, magnificent with its colonnades over seven meters high. In collaboration with Galerie Marian Goodman, the artist has chosen to present his monumental work Matrice di linfa (Sap Matrix), forty-three meters long, accompanied by two new sculptures created specifically for the venue.
His Matrice di linfa was created from a hundred-year-old conifer in the Vallée des Merveilles in the French Alps, from which Penone scraped the volume equivalent to eighty years of growth, evoking "a long sacrificial altar". A powerful echo of the EESC's environmental actions and the celebration of the eightieth anniversary of Auguste Perret's architectural masterpiece!
