We find them everywhere: in the sea of course, but also in our plates, our beauty products, in fertilizers, decoration, products for the house... Seaweeds have invaded our daily life, without us realizing it. So why not learn more about them?
TheTropical Aquarium of the Porte Dorée offers us to discover an exhibition as fun as educational, from October 5, 2021 to January 8, 2023. This exhibition, entitled Seaweed, reveals all the secrets of this plant essential to our ecosystem, through an interactive tour.
Theexhibition deciphers the different uses of seaweed, according to the times and civilizations. Considered as a quasi-divine food in Japan, these seaweeds were consumed only in case of shortage in Northern Europe, while France used them for glass making in the 16th century. In the first part of the tour, we discover all the possible uses of these plants, including the home, the laboratory and the sea bed.
But to better understand these algae, we must go back to the beginning: what is an algae? How do they feed, how do they reproduce, where does their distinctive smell come from? Explore all these biological characteristics in the laboratory, and test your knowledge.
The exhibition then takes us to the seabed, where algae play an essential role in their ecosystem. An immersive scenography reveals fabulous landscapes and a world much more alive than we think.
Finally, the Tropical Aquarium gives us some tips to help save these fragile plants, threatened by human activities. Videos present the conservation and safeguarding programs set up to protect this indispensable link in the chain of life on Earth.
Shall we go there, friends?
