" Gold is the most precious thing in the whole world, for it is immortal and never decays ", says a text by Wei Boyand, dated from the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). It is difficult not to agree with this alchemist when admiring the collections of ornaments on display at theSchool of Jewelry Arts.
This institution, created with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels, invites us to discover numerous jewels, ornaments and ancient art objects. The exhibition Ors et Trésors can be seen free of charge from December 1, 2022 to April 14, 2023.
The pieces on display represent all the know-how of Chinese craftsmen, for over 3,000 years! These masterpieces, from the private collection Mengdiexuan, allow us to admire the delicate craft and artistic work used for several centuries, to achieve such exceptional pieces.
Presented to the European public for the very first time, these ornaments and jewelry are an ode to art, but also to science. The exhibition explains the particularities and properties ofgold, a material that has always been prized by the rich and powerful. Nuggets, crystals and ancient jewelry reveal the different life cycles and uses of gold.
The School of Jewelry Arts also details the different techniques used to create these Chinese works, and reveals the meaning of the symbols displayed. Chinese art has indeed a host of symbols and elements, supposed to bring to the owners of the jewels happiness, good health, longevity, prosperity...
Through these treasures, we discover thehistory and culture of China. Gold and precious stones serve as elegant receptacles for these elements of culture that have crossed the centuries.
A very beautiful exhibition, to discover without delay!
