The Cernuschi Museum continues to open our horizons and enchant us, by highlighting the great artists of Asia. From April 14 to July 30, 2023, the Korean artist Kim Tschang-Yeul will be honored with an exceptional posthumous retrospective. This contemporary artist is particularly well known and appreciated for his trompe l'oeil paintings representing drops of water.
This free exhibition, entitled Kim Tschang-Yeul: The Drop and the Stroke, brings together a selection of works that trace the artist's career and development from the 1950s to his death in 2021.
Kim Tschang-Yeul began working in art after the Korean War. In this new world, where borders have gradually been lowered, the artist was able to reconcile his Asian culture with this art that has become globalized. Trained in New York, he lived for a long time in Paris, where he developed his signature form: these famous trompe-l'oeil water drops, which represent a form of appeasement of the soul for the painter.
These hyper-realistic water drops are often placed on top of canvases with Chinese characters. These writings allow the artist to create a more complex and ever-changing background to his creations. The Chinese characters help create an ambiguity in Kim Tschang-Yeul's painting, which blends optical art with ancient forms of calligraphy.
The play of color, shadow and light are added to these compositions. The Cernuschi Museum reveals mesmerizing canvases, which seem to contain hidden messages. The exhibition also showcases the artist's various creations, who has experimented with newspaper, sand, wood, burlap and even glass.
Come and discover this multi-talented artist, who remains one of the great figures ofKorean art.
