There was a time when a coin was an essential ingredient for a good evening. It was the magic tool for bringing to life the pinball machines, foosball tables and other arcade games available in cafés and game rooms. La Monnaie de Paris invites us to take a trip back in time, to discover this world of games, from the 1950s to the early 2000s.
La Monnaie de Paris invites us to take part in its Insert coin exhibition, from March 1 to June 30, 2024. Nostalgic and pop culture fans take note: this exhibition takes us back to a bygone era of pinball machines, Pac-Man games and jukeboxes. A time when, with pockets full of coins, you could play and have fun with your friends on these new machines, in local cafés, bars and game rooms.
The exhibition revives this festive, playful atmosphere, presenting a variety of electromechanical devices, from foosball to Space Invaders, not forgetting music boxes and pinball machines. Along the way, you can see the evolution of these machines, right up to their demise at the hands of personal game consoles. This world is also a reminder of the importance of cash, which has also gradually disappeared from our daily lives.
In each decade, we can also discover the most popular artists of the day, the great events that have marked culture, technological advances, the habits of the French... In these popular places where young people gathered, an entire society is revealed.
To enhance this temporal experience, the Monnaie de Paris invites you to test and play on a range of historical machines: can you beat Donkey Kong or eat all the ghosts in Pac-Man? With family or friends, try your hand at breaking records and share in this funny, nostalgic experience that takes us through the decades.
The exhibition is highly interactive: several items designed especially for the show are handed out at the entrance. For free visitors, two tokens are offered, and others can be purchased in addition. But there's no need to break the bank at the ticket office: many machines can be played free of charge, and without tokens!
A highly entertaining and original exhibition, not to be missed at La Monnaie de Paris.
