Set in the heart of an 18th-century farm building, the MIDAN, or Musée d'Art Naïf de Vicq, boasts an impressive permanent collection of no less than 1,400 works from 55 countries around the world.
The museum was the brainchild of Max Fourny and his wife Françoise Adnet, who founded the cultural center in 1973, in the heart of their country home. From the outset, their ambition was to bring naive art to the general public: on Max Fourny's death in 1991, the collections were divided between the Musée de Vicq and the Musée de la Halle Saint-Pierre in the Montmartre district of Paris.
What isnaive art?
Naïve or primitive artists have existed since man first drew and painted: indeed, the first works considered naïve date back to prehistoric times, with the drawings on the walls of the Lascaux cave. Since the 20th century, modern primitives have included portraits, landscapes, urban views and war scenes. The very first time the term "naïve" was used was to describe the works of Douanier Rousseau, in 1885. Over the years, naïve art became more widespread, and many artists belonged, in one way or another, to this artistic movement.
In addition to its permanent collections, the Musée d'Art Naïf de Vicq offers temporary exhibitions: until March 31, 2024, take a trip through the Invitation au voyage exhibition and its picturesque paintings. For families, the museum offers a booklet-game for children aged 7 to 11, so they can discover the exhibitions while having fun. Guided tours and creative workshops are also regularly scheduled at MIDAN. A great idea for a cultural outing in the Yvelines!
