Some very strange animals are roaming the grounds of the Château de Rosa Bonheur... These giants are the work of French sculptor Michel Bassompierre. The exhibition Michel Bassompierre chez Rosa Bonheur, regards croisés sur l'animal (Michel Bassompierre at Rosa Bonheur, crossed views on the animal ) celebrates fifty years of career, and creates an original dialogue between two artists who share the same passion, and two very different styles.
Running from May 3 to September 30, 2024, this exhibition at the Château de Rosa Bonheur features ten monumental sculptures by Michel Bassompierre, as well as over twenty bronzes and marbles. Original drawings by the French master, maquettes and plaster molds complete the tour, offering an unprecedented insight into the artist's creative process.
Michel Bassompierre is known for his gentle giants, monumental sculptures of bears, elephants... Powerful animals, which the artist has studied at length to capture their gestures, expressions and fragility. Like Rosa Bonheur, Michel Bassompierre observes and studies his subjects, the better to reproduce their singularities.
These two animal lovers face each other in this major exhibition, which gives pride of place to nature and its wild inhabitants. In both painting and sculpture, animals are always placed at the center of their works, and are represented as the artists see them: not as ferocious, dangerous beasts, but as living beings, rich with a life that is both mysterious and simple.
The Château de Rosa Bonheur pays tribute to the career of Michel Bassompierre with this not-to-be-missed exhibition, bringing to life the ideals of the painter from Thomery. A lovely exhibition to see with the whole family, during these fine days!
