The Paris metro is full of surprises and unsuspected nooks and crannies, with almost a dozen ghost stations, abandoned by the RATP, never used by users or closed to the public for various reasons. Porte Molitor is one of these, built just below the Parc des Princes for Paris-Saint-Germain match nights. Intended for fans, it was however set aside for safety reasons, to avoid crowd movements. In the end, the station was far too close to the stadium...
Did you know? This metro stop is the largest ghost station in Paris.
If you squint your eyes as you pass between Strasbourg-Saint-Denis and République stations, you might see the ghostly station of Saint-Martin, the largest of the 12 abandoned stops on the Paris metro! [Read more]
Built in 1923, this station on lines 9 and 10 is now used as a siding for the metro on the Murat track connection at the Auteuil loop. Fans, meanwhile, have to make do with getting off at Exelmans, Porte de Saint-Cloud or Michel-Ange Molitor.
The ghost station, which is practically brand-new, has never had a metro stop to access it, after the Parc des Princes was enlarged in 1932 and its capacity doubled. Impossible for Porte Molitor to handle so many passengers, far more than expected when the station was built. What a shame!
