Olivier Véran confirms the reopening of terraces on May 19, 2021. Invited to the LCI morning show this Monday, May 10, 2021, the Minister of Health returned to the upcoming dates of the reopening schedule announced by President Macron several days ago."Restaurant terraces will reopen on May 19," Olivier Véran stepped forward.
If restaurant terraces can reopen on the right date, it's mainly because Covid-19 epidemic markers are gradually dropping to less alarming levels. "It's fortunate," rejoiced the Minister of Health, confirming at the same time that health pressure in hospitals had eased since Sunday, with fewer than 5,000 patients in intensive care units. "The summer period will undoubtedly enable us to step up our efficiency in the face of the epidemic, but we'll remain vigilant," explains Olivier Véran.
Regarding a fourth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, the French Minister of Health explained that"for the time being" it was not to be expected. Also, the government is currently preparing for the end of the state of health emergency, which should be voted on in Parliament very shortly.
To ensure that this reopening did not lead to an increase in contamination, the government had decided to impose a limit: restaurants and bars could only reopen 50% of their exterior surface area by May 19. This gauge was deemed unfair by small shopkeepers, who couldn't make money by setting up just two or three tables.
Alain Griset therefore agreed to modify the rule: small terraces (currently with fewer than 10 tables) are not subject to a customer gauge. They will, however, have to install physical separations between tables. The Minister Delegate for SMEs explained on Wednesday May 12 that" wecan't set a gauge when there are four tables or six tables, and so the principle is that there should be separations between the tables, physical separations, so as to allow protection, so it can be Plexiglas, it can be plants, it doesn't matter.
