While the epidemic is escalating in France, the government relies on mass vaccination to curb the fourth wave. Therefore, the health pass is to be extended from August 9, 2021 to long-haul transportation, bars and restaurants. The period of tolerance ends this Monday August 16.

The coronavirus epidemic is taking over in France. Despite promising few weeks at the beginning of summer, the country eventually did not manage to escape from the fourth wave, hitting sooner than expected. The cause behind this epidemic resurgence? The Delta variant, more contagious than the other mutations. The latter mostly hits non-vaccinated people and spreads very quickly.

It is to stop this very threat the government has decided to instate new restrictions, in order to encourage the French to get vaccinated. Among measures decided, the extension of the health pass to many public places. Since July 21, 2021, it is required in places and events gathering over 50 people – against 1,000 before. It includes movie theaters, theaters, and museums.

A second step has been made this Monday August 9, 2021. The government planned the health pass to be extended from “early August” to bars, cafés, and restaurants. Therefore, the health pass is extended to transports, cafés, restaurants, bars, and hospitals starting from Monday August 9, 2021. "The health pass is a small, precious tool likely to save many lives", the government spokesman stated, adding there will be a week of setting up.

This setting-up period comes to an end this Monday August 16, 2021, and more checking actions are to be expected in places the health pass applies to along with fines in case of breaking the rules.
