A former factory built in 1890 by a family of industrialists, the factory is best known for having been immortalized by the Lumière brothers in 1895, appearing in the very first film to depict a factory in the cinema. Partially destroyed in 1945 by bombing raids, it was abandoned in 1970 before being given a new lease of life by architect Éric Daniel, who turned it into a cultural landmark for the town of Ivry in 1990. Today, it is home to the Théâtre des Quartiers d'Ivry, a National Dramatic Center whose mission is to promote, teach and support contemporary creation.
