The 41st edition of this European cultural event is as exciting and full of surprises as ever, as we explore the various places of interest in the City of Light.

You've probably already visited your local town hall to ask for information or complete an administrative procedure... What if you went back to discover all its secrets? This September 21 and 22, 2024, for the Journées du Patrimoine, several arrondissement town halls in Paris are opening their doors to the general public, and enticing us with special tours and events.
8th district town hall
A remarkable architectural work of the Second Empire, the Hôtel Cail has preserved its elegance and richness through a multitude of interior design details.
Marble, rich mosaic parquet floors, gilding, elaborate ceilings, sculptures, reliefs and Napoleon III furniture make this private mansion one of the capital's most interesting architectural features. Each room contains a wealth of details and anecdotes, some original, some surprising, that would make this place a veritable museum, if it could be used as such.
For example, in the wedding waiting room - formerly the dining room - we can see the trace of a bullet hole in the wall, underlined by the inscription: "22, May 1871 - 2 p.m.". A trace of impact, and a trace of history corresponding to the events of the Paris Commune. It was on this very day that Jean-François Cail died, a long way from his hotel. A surprising coincidence, if ever there was one...

Mairie annexe du 14e arrondissement
In 1925, the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris marked the triumph of a new style, Art Deco, which spread throughout the world. Inaugurated in 1936, the town hall annex of the 14th arrondissement is a true jewel of this artistic movement. The village hall, accessible via a monumental grand staircase, is the highlight of this refined complex. Its vast, modular volume is punctuated by painted decorations paying tribute to the life of the 14th arrondissement and the activities that shaped its identity: its health and social vocation, its working-class past and its concentration of artists and scholars. The building's reinforced concrete framework, clad in red brick, allows for the distribution of an original program for the time, offering local residents unprecedented services: dispensary, magistrates' court, social services and even a municipal library.
The tour will explore all these aspects of the monument, which has been fully listed as a Monument Historique since 2012. It will be guided by a curator from the City of Paris.
Meet in front of the Mairie annexe, 28 rue Mouton-Duvernet, 75014 Paris.
Event must be booked in advance.
