For budding historians, there's nothing like a visit to the sublime and inescapable Bibliothèque Mazarine in Paris's 6th arrondissement. Little known to Parisians, this incredible library is open and accessible to the public all year round. Visit the Quai de Conti on Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22, 2024, from 9am to 6pm, for a free tour of France's oldest public library.
Nestled on the edge of the Latin Quarter, opposite the Louvre, the Bibliothèque Mazarine is now part of the Palais de l'Institut and is one of the richest libraries in France. Originally the personal library of Cardinal Mazarin, it was opened to the public in 1643.
A true Parisian jewel, it is useful for all researchers looking for a quiet place to work or recharge their batteries, surrounded by millions of books that are part of history. A study and research library specializing in historical disciplines, the Mazarine Library has never ceased to develop since its creation. Almost 350 years later, it has become a veritable museum of books, and offers an exceptional setting, to be discovered during these Journées du Patrimoine 2024.
The visit to the Mazarine Library is part of the tour of the Institut de France, home to the five Academies, and includes a visit to the library of the Institut de France.
