The Journées du Patrimoine is the time to celebrate history and culture in France! On September 21 and 22, 2024, you'll have the opportunity to discover monuments and cultural sites that usually open their doors for this exceptional occasion. And among the places to see for the occasion, especially if you love books, the Bibliothèque Germaine Tillion in Paris joins the must-see list this year! We look forward to seeing you on September 21!
The Bibliothèque Germaine Tillion, named in honor of French anthropologist and resistance fighter Germaine Tillion, is a unique space. Since its inauguration in 2013, this library has become a meeting place for culture enthusiasts, housing an impressive collection of books and documents around travel. The modern architecture and welcoming atmosphere make it a great place to escape to faraway lands, without leaving the capital!
Not only will you discover a unique and diversified collection, such as maps and other tourist guides, but you'll also have the opportunity to discover all its secrets. So don't hesitate, visit the Germaine Tillion Library and immerse yourself in a fascinating world of knowledge and heritage!
You may have borrowed guidebooks, maps and travelogues from the Bibliothèque du tourisme et des voyages... but did you know that it also contains a number of treasures? On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2024, the librarians invite you to discover some of them.
In 1986, the City of Paris purchased the Touring Club de France library and made it available to the public. This association of velocipedists, then motorists, worked very effectively for the development of tourism in France between 1891 and 1983.
The library belonged to the members of the Touring Club de France, who could borrow travel guides or books on tourism. At the time of its creation, it could claim to contain the entire editorial output on the subject. It was therefore the first library on the subject, and remains unique of its kind. This heritage collection is enriched every year, making it easily accessible to researchers and enthusiasts alike. Alongside the heritage collection is the current collection of travel guides, travelogues, maps and magazines. These can be borrowed by anyone registered with a Paris library.
As you can see, this is an invitation to travel, and even better, to travel back in time.
