For the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days), science enthusiasts are invited to the Ecole des Mines Paris - PSL, in the 6th arrondissement, to discover the establishment, as well as its Museum of Mineralogy, on Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22, 2024. Located in the heart of theHôtel de Vendôme, a stone's throw from the Jardins du Luxembourg, the engineering school, one of the best in France, is waiting to reveal its secrets.
Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter for over 200 years, the school also offers its students and faculty an idyllic setting in which to study and work! The grand staircase leading to the Musée de Minéralogie, with its mineral decor, is home to Claude Hugard de la Tour 's 1855 paintings depicting the "spectacle of nature"; andAlexandre Denis Abel de Pujol's frescoes, allegories of knowledge, science and industry. In the form of a winged young woman draped in antique style, Science crowns the assembly of scientists"who have distinguished themselves in geology and mineralogy".
A great opportunity to discover this beautiful place and learn all about mineralogy. We'll also be taking the opportunity to discover the Bibliothèque de l'École des Mines, theHôtel de Vendôme and the library of the École des Mines. Shall we go, friends?

The Hôtel de Vendôme and its garden
Since 1815, the École Supérieure des Mines de Paris has been housed in the Hôtel de Vendôme, which dates back to the very early 18th century and was extended in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can explore the Vendôme building and its garden overlooking the greenhouses of the Jardin de Luxembourg.
One-way access will be available from the orchid greenhouses of the Jardin du Luxembourg.
The Library
The reading room and its glass roof, as well as the offices of the Mines Paris - PSL Library, decorated with period woodwork, open their doors on the occasion of these days.
A selection of works of art, antiquarian books, manuscripts and archival documents will be on display throughout the tour. Particular emphasis will be placed on the travel diaries of 19th-century students and the travel accounts of teachers and engineers who have left their mark on the history of the school.
In the wake of the Olympic Games, visitors will also be able to visit the archive exhibition "Snapshots of sport at the school": sport in all its forms, from links with teaching to sporting competitions in which students and staff have distinguished themselves!
The Mineralogy Museum
For over 200 years, the mineralogical collections of the École des Mines de Paris have been housed in the Hôtel de Vendôme, and are among the most comprehensive and spectacular in the world. They contain some 100,000 samples, 4,000 of which are displayed in showcases: minerals, rocks, precious stones (including gems from the French Crown Jewels) and meteorites are exhibited in an 80-metre gallery of priceless historical and patrimonial interest.
