Every year, the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) invite us to explore the treasures of Paris like never before. Between free visits, exceptional openings and unusual events, places of all kinds take it in turns to offer us their programs designed to help us discover their history and fascinating secrets. In Paris, while the most famous monuments are part of the program, it's also an opportunity to discover the secrets of the capital and its lesser-known spots.
In the 18th arrondissement, the Montmartre cemetery is famous for its many illustrious personalities. Its popularity contrasts with that of a lesser-known site, hidden away at the foot of the iconic hill, the Cimetière Saint-Vincent-de-Montmartre. Those who know Paris like the back of their hand may already have heard of it, while explorers may have discovered it on their strolls.
Inaugurated in 1831, this little-known cemetery, with some 900 tombs and overlooked by the imposing Basilique du Sacré-Coeur, was home to some of Montmartre's most famous families and personalities, including the painter Pissaro, the writer Marcel Aymé, author of the short story Passe-Muraille, which inspired a sculpture hidden on the hill, and Michou, a key figure in Montmartre and director of the cabaret that bears his name.
