The Théâtre du Gouvernail is a small Parisian theater in the 19th arrondissement, known for its intimate, friendly atmosphere. Offering a varied program, including plays, stand-up shows, concerts and artistic events, the theater showcases young, emerging artists. With its reduced capacity, it offers a proximity between artists and audience that can be rare in Parisian theaters today. For the Journées du Patrimoine 2024, the Théâtre du Gouvernail is hosting a free show that was a great success at the Festival d'Avignon 2023, La Suite d'un Bal Masqué, based on the text byAlexandrine-Sophie de Bawr. Please note that reservations are required for this event.
March 1813, Paris. The ball season is drawing to a close, and Madame de Mareuil, a young widow fond of intrigue, is hosting her childhood friend Madame de Belmont. The latter has come to Paris to finalize a lawsuit against Monsieur de Versac. That's all it takes for Madame de Mareuil to conspire with Édouard, her servant, to "amicably" settle the differences between Madame de Belmont and Monsieur de Versac, without their knowledge...
Alexandrine-Sophie de Bawr (1773 - 1860), author and woman of aristocratic origin, Alexandrine-Sophie de Bawr was a recognized creator of her time. The success of her plays brought her the patronage of Louis XVIII, making her one of the few women paid by the state to write.
By staging this classic comedy, Compagnie Marguerite gives Alexandrine-Sophie de Bawr's work the posterity it deserves.
