The Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) take place this weekend, September 21 and 22, 2024! And for this year's event, a number of fountains in Paris and the Île-de-France region (but especially Paris) are in the spotlight, with organized tours to learn all about these monuments, veritable jewels of French heritage.
Because fountains are an important part of the town's history... And that history goes back to the Middle Ages! In those days, fountains were primarily used to provide drinking water for the population. The oldest known public fountain dates back to the 14th century and was located in the Halles district, supplied by northern springs. Monuments such as the Fontaine des Innocents, built in 1550, bear witness to a time when water was precious and often irregularly distributed.
Under the reign of Henri IV, a major step forward was taken with the construction of the Samaritaine pump, designed to raise water from the Seine to supply new fountains. Later, in the 19th century, Sir Richard Wallace, affected by the water shortage during the siege of Paris, donated some 50 fountains that are now emblematic of the city. Designed for both utility and aesthetic appeal, they remain an integral part of the Parisian landscape.
For the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days), a number of fountains are included in the tour programs, and all of them will soon have no secrets for you. Friends, shall we take a stroll to discover the fountains?
