At the same time as the fight against the coronavirus epidemic, France is also faced with another challenge: moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle. It also applies to food waste. On that matter, this Monday December 28, 2020 the government has announced the creation of a new domestic label: “no-food-waste” or “Anti Gaspillage Alimentaire” in French.
On one hand, this label aims at encouraging initiatives within the catering and distribution trades, as well as informing consumers and urging them to adopt more sustainable methods. It comes with a law from February 10, 2020. It makes sectors involved, naming food distribution and mass catering, to reduce their food waste by 50% by 2025, in comparison with 2015. As for commercial catering, production and transformation trades, this goal is to be meet by 2030.
According to the press release from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Department of Agriculture and Food it is expected to enable to “orientate consumers’ choices and create a virtuous dynamic for companies involved”. Conditions enabling to get the label and conditions for approval and controls are to be detailed in 2021.
