ZooSafari de Thoiry, located in the Yvelines département of France, saw the birth of two babies in its enclosures last May! Two young female Oryx algazelle gave birth for the first time to a female baby each. This good news has been very positively received, as the Oryx is now an extinct species in the wild.
Now extinct in the wild, the Oryx algazelle species has had four births in France this year, including two at Thoiry Zoo. Oryx were once found in North Africa, but over-hunting and habitat loss caused by climate change have gradually led to theextinction of the species in its native habitat. Thoiry Zoo is part of a program to reintroduce the species, in collaboration with the European Breeding Program (EEP) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA).
In recent years, thanks to this major reintroduction effort, there are now around 400 Oryx algazelle living in the wild in Senegal, Tunisia and Niger. For the time being, Thoiry Zoo 's two latest arrivals are still far too small and dependent on their mothers, but you can still visit them in their enclosures to watch them grow up and enjoy these beautiful moments of complicity!
