Rain and flooding: three Île-de-France departments under yellow alert this Friday

Warning of heavy rain and flooding risks this Friday, June 21, 2024 in several French departments. In today's bulletin, Météo France has placed 10 of France's départements under orange vigilance for rain and flooding, and 20 others under yellow, including three in the Paris region. We take a look at the weather forecast for the next few hours.

Meteorologists will be keeping a close eye on the weather again this Friday, June 21, 2024. Due to the passage of a new disturbance, Météo France is warning of a new risk of heavy rain and flooding in several departments of France, located mainly in the center of the country, but also on the side of the Alps. In today's bulletin, Météo France states:"A rainfall event which is not exceptional near the Alps, but which could have consequences, particularly in terms of river overflows due to already saturated soils and snowmelt".

As a result, on Friday June 21, Météo France placed 10 departments on orange alert and 20 others on yellow alert due to the risk of heavy rain and flooding. The most closely scrutinized departments are Mayenne and Maine-et-Loire (also under red flood alert), as well as Sarthe, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret, Indre-et-Loire, Eure-et-Loir, Savoie, Isère and Hautes-Alpes.

In the Île-de-France region, three departments have been placed on yellow alert: Yvelines,Essonne and Seine-et-Marne. According to Météo France, these three departments could be affected by heavy rain and the risk of flooding from 3am onwards on Thursday night. The phenomenon could last until around 10am.

"Late Friday night and during the morning, thundery rain will circulate from the south-west of the region eastwards, mainly affecting the south of Yvelines, Essonne and Seine-et-Marne" warns Meteo France, adding that"rainfall activity is notable, with high intensities and local accumulations". "Uncertainty remains as to the location and intensity of the expected rainfall, as the region borders a more active zone to the southwest", adds the weather service.

In addition, please note that the whole of the Île-de-France region has once again been placed under yellow vigilance forthunderstorms for the day of June 21. According to Météo France, thunderstorms could hit the various departments of the Paris region between 3 and 10 a.m. on Friday, and again between 4 and 8 p.m. on Friday.

Residents and visitors to the region are advised to remain vigilant, following updates from Météo France and taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves from these severe weather conditions. In addition, due to the adverse weather conditions, several communes have decided to cancel their Fête de la Musique festivities, including the town of Nanteuil-lès-Meaux, in Seine-et-Marne. It remains to be seen whether other communes will follow suit and cancel their scheduled concerts.

Météo France has issued a reminder of what to do in the event of heavy rain or sudden flooding:

  • Postpone all trips on foot or by car;
  • Leave children safely at school;
  • Take refuge upstairs;
  • Cut off electricity, gas and heating networks, if possible and without endangering yourself.
