Every five years, the citizens of theEuropean Union are called to the polls to elect their Members of the European Parliament. In all, 705 elected representatives (soon to be 720) sit in Strasbourg, including 81 French MPs. This Sunday, June 9, 2024, it's time once again to elect the French representatives.
The European elections are special in more ways than one. Firstly, all citizens aged 18 or over are entitled to vote in these elections, even nationals of other European countries. Indeed, people living in France but not of French nationality can only vote in two elections: the municipal elections, and the European elections (provided they are nationals of an EU member state, and are of legal voting age in their own country).
In addition, MEPs are elected by direct universal suffrage, in a single round. " Seats are distributed among the lists obtaining at least 5% of the votes cast, using the proportional representation system based on the highest average. Seats are allocated to candidates according to the order of presentation on each list ", explains the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas France.
