It's been going on for almost 13 years in Val-de-Marne. The Syndicat intercommunal de gestion des déchets de la Vallée de l'Yerres et des Sénarts (Sivom) is offering local residents the chance toadopt hens, with its"Adopte un bec" operation. Each year, 200 households are given the opportunity to welcome these gallinaceous creatures into their homes, reputed for their ability to ingest kitchen and gardening biowaste, with fresh eggs as a bonus every morning!
Residents can pick up the chickens for the symbolic price of 2 euros each, before declaring them, a necessary process in the event of an epidemic such as avian flu. According to the Sivom, 450 tonnes of waste per year would be eliminated thanks to these chickens! You are concerned if you live in one of the following fifteen communes: Boussy-Saint-Antoine, Brie-Comte-Robert, Brunoy, Combs-la-Ville, Crosnes, Épinay-sous-Sénart, Quincy-sous-Sénart, Mandres-les-Roses, Marolles-en-Brie, Moissy-Cramayel, Périgny-sur-Yerrres, Santeny, Varennes-Jarcy, Villecresnes and Yerres.
To adopt your own pair of hens, all you need to do is fill in a registration form and have a house and garden of at least 8m2 to welcome them in good conditions by mid-March. You'll need to buy a henhouse to receive them in April if you're chosen! Good to know: each hen can consume 10 kilos of food scraps per month, i.e. almost 250 kilos of waste per year for two hens.
