Hurricane Kirk: red alert for flooding in Seine-et-Marne, the Grand Morin aval under close surveillance

The bad weather caused by Hurricane Kirk is making itself felt in the Île-de-France region. This Wednesday, October 9 and Thursday, October 10, 2024, the Seine-et-Marne département, to the east of the Paris region, has been placed under vigilance rouge for flooding, in addition to vigilance orange for rain and flooding.

Be careful! In the Paris region, the week of October 7, 2024 is marked by severe weather caused byHurricane Kirk. As a result, the whole of theÎle-de-France region has been placed under vigilance orange by Météo France for rain and flooding. However, for one of the Ile-de-France departments, it will be a double alert. To the east of the region, Seine-et-Marne has been placed under red vigilance for flooding this Wednesday, October 9 and Thursday, October 10, 2024.

Particular attention is being paid to the Grand Morin river downstream, where flooding could reach record levels between Wednesday evening and Thursday, according to Vigicrue: " The precipitation observed and expected today, Wednesday and the following night, is causing a general rise on the Grand Morin. Precipitation is expected to intensify in the late afternoon and evening, with the most rapid increases in Pommeuse expected in the evening and overnight. The peak in the Pommeuse area is expected to occur in the morning or during the day on Thursday. It could, however, arrive a little later, depending on flow conditions and the temporal and geographical distribution of the rainfall. Downstream, in the Couilly area, levels will be rising all day tomorrow, Thursday. Strong to major flooding is expected. The extent will depend on the actual rainfall observed.

While the Grand Morin Aval section is under red alert, other rivers are being closely monitored during the storm, notably the Seine. The meteorological monitoring site states: "The Marne de la Ferté à Meaux and Seine à Paris stretches, as well as, to a lesser extent, the Seine moyenne, Loing amont-Ouanne, Loing aval, Armançon, Serein and Yonne amont are under active surveillance.
