Released in cinemas in February 2016, Dirty Papy is a comedy directed by Dan Mazer, screenwriter and long-time collaborator of Sacha Baron Cohen. The film stars two counter-acting actors: Robert De Niro, as a wanton grandfather, and Zac Efron, as his uptight grandson. This wacky, provocative comedy follows the rocky adventures of this unlikely duo, swept up in a series of delirious adventures during a trip to Florida. Available to stream on Prime Video from October 1, 2024, Dirty Papy is a film that blends potty humor with politically incorrect situations.
Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) is an ambitious, serious and slightly uptight young lawyer, about to marry his boss's bossy daughter, Meredith. His future looks all set: a prestigious wedding and a promising career in his future father-in-law's firm. But everything changes when her grandfather, Dick Kelly (Robert De Niro), widower and notorious sex maniac, takes her on an unexpected road-trip to Florida. This trip, on the eve of his wedding, turns Jason's well-ordered life upside down.
Dick has only one goal: to enjoy life to the full, regardless of convention. He embarks his grandson on a series of wild adventures: drinking parties, bar brawls and even a memorable karaoke contest. As these events unfold, Jason begins to question his future marriage, while discovering another side of life alongside his wacky grandfather. Dirty Papy is an irreverent comedy that plays on the clash of generations and the contrast between the serious young man and the eccentric grandfather.
Dirty Papy will appeal above all to fans of offbeat comedies, with their sometimes crude humor and deliberately exaggerated situations. The film will particularly appeal to viewers who appreciate irreverent comedies like Very Bad Trip or Our Worst Neighbors, which aren't afraid to break taboos or go beyond the limits of political correctness. Robert De Niro, usually associated with dramatic roles, surprises here by slipping into the skin of an insolent, libidinous grandfather, while Zac Efron explores the role of the uptight young man with ease.
The film's strength lies in this generational contrast, with Dick, an unfiltered older man who challenges social conventions, and Jason, a young professional stuck in a monotonous, predictable life. The road-trip thus becomes a journey of initiation for Jason, who rediscovers the pleasures of life under the unpredictable influence of his grandfather. With increasingly far-fetched situations, Dirty Papy plays on the confrontation between these two worlds, while offering moments of pure comedy.
Available on Prime Video from October 1, 2024, Dirty Papy is a daring, offbeat comedy driven by the excellent duo of Robert De Niro and Zac Efron. The film promises a good dose of laughs thanks to its outrageous situations and politically incorrect dialogue. Perfect for an evening out with friends, Dirty Papy takes you on a memorable road-trip, where the limits are constantly being pushed back.
Our review of DirtyPapy (2016):
Screenwriter John M. Phillips came up with the idea for Dirty Papy. He even drew inspiration for Dick's character from his own father, and was surprised that an actor of Robert de Niro's stature agreed to play such a role: "He had to be a bit terrifying, and very intelligent; De Niro is."
Indeed, the actor has lost none of his vigor. From the very first minutes of the film, we see him doing pull-ups with ease just after he's been caught by Jason (Zack Efron) in a rather awkward situation: the tone is set.
What follows is a comedy that's all about dirty jokes and a thousand and one ways to have a party. With Florida as their playground, grandfather and grandson embark on a drunken adventure from which they won't emerge unscathed, and their dignity even less so. It wouldn't be funny if De Niro wasn't: he's the immature carabiniere, while Zac Efron is the uptight old man. While one trusts to chance, the other wants to plan everything - all the more so as the shadow of a maniacal wife hangs over him.
De Niro's uninhibited, slightly jemenfutistic sense of humor is reminiscent of that of Little Miss Sunshine's grandfather, , only more over-the-top! We can guess that this apparent detachment hides a past as troubled as it is painful. Who is this super grandpa who defies gangsters, charms young women and doesn't even fear for his liver?
As for Zack Efron, he's obviously come a long way since the days ofHigh School Music Hall. Very credible opposite the titan De Niro, he nonetheless retains a very"Paperboy" style: proof of this is that his fiancée forces him to drive a pink car. In Dirty Papy, the actor doesn't hesitate to laugh at the "pussycat" label he's been given, for example, by not turning down a good karaoke or wearing "bee briefs"!
