Released in 2018, Mauvaises herbes is a comedy directed by Kheiron, also known for his talents as an actor and screenwriter. With a prestigious cast including Catherine Deneuve (Indochine) and André Dussollier (Diplomatie), the film tells a story of redemption and second chances in a moving and funny setting.
Waël, played by Kheiron, is a former street urchin who lives on the outskirts of Paris, running small scams, accompanied by Monique(Catherine Deneuve), a retired woman who looks after him. Waël's life takes a turn for the worse when Monique's friend Victor(André Dussollier) offers him volunteer work at a center for children excluded from the school system. Waël then finds himself in charge of a group of six rebellious teenagers, expelled for various reasons including truancy, insolence and carrying weapons. The explosive encounter between these "weeds" gives rise to a veritable miracle, transforming everyone's lives.
Kheiron explains: "Above all, I wanted to tackle themes that are close to my heart such as, for example, redemption, communication or the good fortune of being able to welcome to France people who come from far away and enrich our culture."
And for added authenticity, his film is based on real-life events:"I based my film mainly on material I know. The six children in the film are authentic cases, either that I observed as an educator, or that my colleagues told me about, or that happened to people I know when they were teenagers."
Mauvaises herbes will appeal to fans of social comedies and films that explore themes of redemption and education. The film stands out for its good-natured humor and its ability to treat serious subjects with lightness and humanity. Fans of films such as Les Choristes and Intouchables will appreciate this touching and inspiring story. Kheiron's performance, combined with those of Catherine Deneuve and André Dussollier, brings depth and authenticity to this tale of transformation and renewal.
Mauvaises herbes is a moving comedy that shows how unlikely encounters can change lives. Available on Prime Video from July 1, 2024, this film offers a touching reflection on redemption, second chances and the importance of education. Whether you're a fan of social comedies or looking for an inspiring story, Weeds promises a cinematic experience rich in emotion and laughter.
