Following in the footsteps of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella, it's Snow White' s turn to be modernized. Disney Studios has announced a remake of the 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but with a few changes that have left fans of the classic in stitches.
The character of Snow White will become more inclusive, as Rachel Zegler, the Latina actress seen in West Side Story, will play her in the live-action film. The cast also includes Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. As for the dwarves, they will disappear altogether, to be replaced by magical creatures. According to a Disney press release, this decision was taken"to avoid reinforcing the stereotypes of the original animated film". The company also states that it has"consulted members of the dwarfism community" regarding this decision. Goodbye Grumpy or Dopey, then. It remains to be seen which magical creatures will be chosen to replace them.
This major change, which will have a definite impact on the film's title, was prompted by the comments of actor Peter Dinklage, best known for his role as Tyron Lanister in Game of Thrones. The latter, concerned by dwarfism, denounced the backward stereotype of dwarves that would have continued to be perpetuated in the remake."You're progressive on the one hand but you keep telling this backward story about seven dwarves living together in a cave! What the fuck are you doing?",
The animated film is due to go into production in March 2022, but has not yet been given a release date.
