Making its debut with boundless energy, "The Idol",Sam Levinson's new creation , promises to be as captivating as its predecessor, "Euphoria" . Presented out of competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, this daring series stars Lily-Rose Depp and Abel The Weeknd Tesfaye, plunging us into the tumultuous and often toxic world of music and Hollywood.
"The Idol" appeals to an audience hungry for colorful, daring dramas blending music, celebrity and mystery. Fans of"Euphoria" and other works by Sam Levinson will certainly be drawn to this new series, which promises a similar aesthetic and narrative, but with a new twist centered on the world of music.
If you're a fan of The Weeknd, you'll be curious to see him in a dramatic role, bringing his own music industry experience to his character. What's more, Lily-Rose Depp 's participation brings a touch of Hollywood glamour and emotional complexity to her troubled pop star character.
Finally, if you're drawn to intriguing plots and complex characters,"The Idol" is sure to captivate. With a story centered on a troubled pop star and a cult guru, the series explores themes of celebrity, power, manipulation and identity in a provocative, hard-hitting way.
At the heart of "The Idol" we find Jocelyn (played by Lily-Rose Depp), an aspiring pop star who, after a nervous breakdown hampered her last tour, is determined to reclaim her title as America's sexiest pop star. Her life becomes complicated when she begins a complex relationship with Tedros (played by The Weeknd), a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult. Their tumultuous relationship, between excess and debauchery, unfolds in an unbridled and uncontrollable Hollywood.
At theCannes press conference ,Sam Levinson emphasized that "The Idol" is not intended to tell the story of a particular pop star, but rather to explore the pressure and loneliness often associated with celebrity. The series aims to highlight the corrosive effects of fame and the ease with which we can surround ourselves with myth-makers who keep us on a pedestal.
Lily-Rose Depp also made it clear at the conference that the series doesn't tell anyone else's story. She explained that they set out to create a character who feels both like a pop star of our time, but who exists in her own universe.
The Weeknd, who is also co-creator of the series, shared that the concept of the series was to create a dark and twisted fairy tale around the music industry. He stressed that the goal was to create their own pop star, using his, Sam's and Lily's experiences to create something special, bold, exciting and fun that will make people laugh, piss some off.
It should be noted that the production of the series has experienced some turbulence. Budget problems, last-minute script changes and a difficult working environment marked the shoot. However, Sam Levinson took these challenges head-on, and even completely remade the $54-75 million project. HBO supported these decisions, stating that the creative changes were in the best interests of the production and the crew.
Despite a mixed reception at its Cannes premiere, not least due to its explicit sexual content and controversial themes, it's clear that"The Idol" is here to make waves and provoke discussion. The series is scheduled to air on HBO from June 4, 2023 and available in France from June 5, 2023 in the Warner Pass on Amazon Prime Video.
Prepare to be dazzled by this fascinating dive into the world of music and celebrity, seen through the unique prism of Levinson, Depp and The Weeknd. There's no doubt that"The Idol" is a series that will keep you talking, thinking and entertained throughout. Expect to be captivated by this bold and disturbing story.
